Installing SQL Server 2005 (Sept 2005) using VMWare

I spent several days on this one and saw no comment around here so it might worth mentioning...

When you try installing SQL Server 2005 (Sept 2005) on a Virtual Machine (in my case using VMWare) you MUST transfer all the setup files (SQLDEV or SQLSTD or SQLENT folder) to the guest machine.

DON'T map the folder to the host. Transfer all files to the guest machine and then run the setup.

It seems this is not an issue (anymore from Sept-05) when running Vitual PC but it is true for VMWare.Tongue Tied

Regards,

Claudio

Claudio,

VMWare is not an environment that we actively test. You are correct that we did make changes in the September CTP to support this scenario on Microsoft VPC. I'm not familiar enough with VMWare to know how they implemented mapped folders. I suggest you contact VMWare and see what they say.

Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

Dan
