can anyone help with this? It's really bothering me.
|||To install the management tools after you've already installed the engine:

1) Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs
2) Select Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and click the Change button
3) In the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Maintenance wizard that appears, select the Workstation Components radio button and click Next
4) In the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup wizard that appears, click the Next button to move past the title page
5) Click Next to move past the system configuration check
6) Click the Change Installed Components button
7) Expand Client Compents in the tree and click on the Management Tools item, select "Will be installed on the local hard drive", and then click next
8) On the Ready to Update page, click Install|||Thank you very much, Ill give that a try tonight when I get home from work.
|||Ok so heres what heppens:
1) Open Add/Remove Programs
2) Click "change" on SQL Server 2005 CTP, ("Sql Server 2005" istn there, is this a problem?)
3) Click Next on the main page, it comes to a screen: "Change or Remove Instance"
4) Click on Change Installed Components (The only other button is to remove SQl Server)
5) The tree view doesnt contain the Tools, ony full text indexing, replication and data files
AM I missing something so very obvious?
Thanks for your help so far
|||Are you talking about a CTP version of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (or Developer, etc.), or SQL Server Express? There should be tools in all the CTP versions of the up-level sku's. There are no tools included with SQL Server Express.

There is a free CTP download of SQL Server Management Studio Express available here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/ Look for the paragraph about a "Free Management Tool". Management Studio Express contains a subset of Management Studio functionality tailored for managing SQL Server Express servers.

A couple caveats:

Management Studio Express is a CTP, so there are still a few minor defects that remain to be fixed before it's officially released in the first half of 2006. If you find any issues, this forum is a great place to report them.

Management Studio Express does not run side-by-side with the full SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. If SQL Server 2005 Management Studio is installed on the same machine as Management Studio Express, Management Studio Express won't start correctly.

There is also a defect where installing the full SQL Server 2005 Books Online from a SQL Server 2005 CD causes Management Studio Express not to start. Users have reported that they don't have this problem with the Express version of Books Online downloaded from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9697AAAA-AD4B-416E-87A4-A8B154F92787&displaylang=en.|||Thanks for the reply.
I am trying to install the Developer edition of sql server 2005 CTP.
The tools are on the install options and everything, but it says that it cant install them because they are already installed. Here is the exact message:
Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition CTP
Allowed Action: Maintain (Action is only available from Add or Remove Programs)
Reason: Cannot maintain product, to maintain the product go to Add or Remove Programs
|||It sounds like you have a previous copy of the SQL Server Express Edition Tools installed, but that they've been orphaned. If you would like to remove it, try the following command line:

msiexec /x {2750B389-A2D2-4953-99CA-27C1F2A8E6FD} /l*v c:\SQLExpressTools_Uninstall.log

After that, try your Dev installation again.|||Thank you very much Jeffrey. That worked a treat! you have solved a very annoying problem.
Is there anyways that I was supopsed to know to do that? Or is that some kind of bug? Did I miss something along the way?
Cheers
|||Now there is another problem, the SQL Server Management Studio freezes whenever I load it up. I cant really say much more than that. I will post the error signature below, I hope someone can help:
