Installion problem with SQL Express April CTP

When intalling SQL Server 2005 Express this gives me the message:
SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service forserver configuration. The error was: {Microsoft}{ODBC Driver Manager}Data source name not found and no default driver specified Refer toserver error logs and setup logs for more information. For details onhow to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log Files" in SQL ServerBooks Online. Error No:29545
which I don't get since I have SQL Server 2000 Dev Edtion running,Win 2K sp4. I couldn't find anything in the MS KB to explain why it'sdoing so.. anything I missed perhaps?

Well, what does the setup log file have to say about the failure?

Installing SSIS with SQL Server 2000

Hi All,

I have installed SSIS on server running SQL 2000 but I don't see the Business Intelligence or SSIS. I could see the SSIS service is running but do not see VS or BI version of VS.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Perhaps you need to run installer of VS.NET and add BI Dev Studio.|||

Fahad,

I didn't see the option to install BI Dev Studio from VS 2005 installation. Do I need to install full VS to get the BI Dev Studio?

Please advice.

Thanks.

|||I have not done this myself as it's another group here, but my understanding is that when you install the SQL Server 2005 client tools, you'll get BIDS.|||

That was my understanding too but after installing SQL 2005 client tools and Integration Services, I don't see the BIDS.

Bader Cheema wrote:

Under Start->Programs->Microsoft SQL Server 2005 you don't see SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio?|||

I do able to see client tools but NOT BIDS.

|||I have had a similar problem installing the tools. I have installed the evaluation version of SQL 2005 including all the tools etc on a development server. BIDS is on there and works fine.

However, when I can to install the client tools on my desktop, I get management studio and all the other tools but not BIDS, the only thing that I can think of is because I use Visual Web Developer Express rather than Visual Studio.

Is there a workaround for this as its a little bit restrictive of Microsoft if this is the case.

ThanksMark,
You will either need to enable ASP on II6 (Disabled by default) or register
it so you can then enable it, to register refer
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/k6h9cz8h(VS.80).aspx
to enable,
Open IIS Manager > Select Web Service Extensions, select the appropiate
service and "Allow" it..

Integrated Security

We have SS 2000 and SSRS 2000. SSRS is connecting as a Windows account of "NT
Authority\Network Service". That account is in both RSEXEC roles in
ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB. When we log into the Report Server
website as a domain name (which on the server has admin rights), it works
fine. When we log into ReportServer using SQL Authentication using a testname
that is on the server, we get the home page with no access to our folder. We
added that id to SQL, we have added that user to RS with full access, we have
tried even adding that to the RSEXEC. No change. We also checked IIS for the
Report folder and it is using Windows Integrated Security. One more thing,
the dataset is using the aspnet login. When we make the person an
administrator on the server - it works fine. Of course that options is not
feasible. Any ideas of what we missed? You are confusing two different things. First, who the user is and what the
credentials to retrieve the data for the report are.
This is completely two different things (although they can be the same).
When you go to the website it is using the integrated windows security that
identifies who the user is that is on the computer which is accessing
Reporting Services. This has nothing whatsoever to do with SQL
Authentication. That is strictly for credentials of the data source.
My suggestion is this. First read up on roles. Roles are used to give access
to the folders, reports, reporting functionality like deploying reports and
subscriptions. Plan how you want to organize and give access. What I do
because it is easiest for me, I create a local group that I add individual
domain users and domain groups to. Then I give this group role membership in
Reporting Services.
Next I run SQL Server in mixed mode security (which I think you are already
doing). I setup a login that is a read only login. I use that for the
credentials of the data source. This buys you performance as well. It allows
connection pooling to work its magic.

fixed this morning - we had not given security to the home folder. But I
still have one more question for you. We do understand a bit about the roles
(but are still learning) but when you talk about the groups are you talking
about a Windows group on the server or something else?

Integrate Service Pack

Hi,
With Windows XP and its Service Pack 2, one is able to run the service pack
at the command line with an -integrate option, and it will update an RTM
Windows XP install file set to an SP2 Windows XP install file set.
Do the SQL Server service packs have the -integrate option?

installing sql server 2000

Hello,
im new to sql server 2000. After I install it on my xp machine, I tried
starting
the server by clicking on the service manager. I got the following error.
"service could not start due to logon failure". I then went into enterprise
manager, selected the service group, and selected new server registration.
In there I was told the instance of my server is already registered. Does
anyone know what I can do next?
Hello,
The SQL server needs to do "log on" an account of
administrator, verifies that your account has the necessary privileges
or places the correct account in the properties of the service, for
that you have to go to the services of your PC and look for
service MSSQLSERVER then in properties go to the tab Log On, and select the
option "Log on as: This account " then fill the box with the correct
account...

Installing SQL Reporting Service 2005

Is it possible to install SQL reporting service 2005 using a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition License?

What should be the version of SQL Server to install SQL Reporting Service 2005 ?

OR

Which all versions of SQL Server supports SQL Reporting Service 2005?

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,

Richy

No, you should install sql server 2005, standar developer or enterprise, there is also a new version called sql server 2005 express with advanced services, this one has also reporting services with some limitations.|||

This topic in books online explains which editions of SQL Server you can use to host the report server database.

Installing sql notification service

Hello, I'm trying to install sql notification service on my laptop, but its giving me an error saying that the .net framework should be installed. I have the .net framework 1.1 and vs.net 2003 installed. Any one have any ideas what would cause this??The error is from dumb Install Shield installer that will not detect what is already installed in the box because the stupid application goes to Install Shield website to extract the file it thinks it needs. If you say no it terminates the install operation. Hope this helps.

Installing SQL Express SP1 with existing User Instances

Hi,

I've read the readme for the Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/d/1/bd1e0745-0e65-43a5-ac6a-f6173f58d80e/ReadmeSQL2005SP1.htm

But I'm not quite clear on what will happen if you currently have SQL Server Express 2005 installed with User Instances, and then you launch the installer for SP1.

Will it also update the User Instance? If so, how could I tell? When I go to the registry for the User Instance it has the older version value ie.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\[instance name]\MSSQLServer\CurrentVersion = 9.00.1399.06

Shouldn't it be saying 9.00.2047.00?

Does this mean that I have to uninstall the User Instance before installing SP1?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Sam

User instances work by cloning the actual instance at startup time, so as long as the main instance is updated then all should work.|||

User Instances are upgrade automatically as Euan says. You really shouldn't be using the registry to judge the success of an upgrade, it's complex and undocumented. You're not looking at the main Key for the SQL version installed.

Rather, after you perform the upgrade, go into the query tool of choice (Managment Studio, SQLCmd, etc.) and run the following:

SELECT @.@.version

This will return the Edition and Version of the server you connected to. If it is not 2047, then you didn't upgrade that Instance.

Hi Euan and Mike,

Your comments have been helpful.

What I found was that I actually hadn't upgraded our instance of SQL properly.

I've been using the command line for the SQL installer and worked out that the way for it to update the existing instance (and subsequent user instances) was to use

SQLEXPR.EXE /qb INSTANCENAME=<MyInstance> UPGRADE=SQL_Engine

Using these options for the installer I could confirm the upgrade both in the registry and more importantly using

SELECT @.@.version

Thanks

Installing Sql Express on a Peer to Peer Network Log in and Password problems

I am trying to set up Sql Server Express on a peer to peer network. I need to set a log in and password for the service so that I can access the DBs from any machine. (ultimately I will be using VB but for now I am just trying to make the connecton through the Management Component studio). I have sql express installed on both machines. I can not find anywhere it will allow me to change from Windows authentication to Sql Authentication I have tried both in the properties of Sql Express management studio and the local Computer management. Help please!!!

hi,

SQLExpress installs by default diabling standard SQL Server authenticated connections...

you can modify that behaviour at install time, specifying the SECURITYMODE=SQL parameter if you execute the setup wit command line parameters or setup.ini file, or in the installation wizard unchecking the "hide advanced features" check box.. a successive wizard task will enable you to define "Mixed mode" as connection option...

if you like to enable Mixed mode after installation, you can manually "hack" the Windows registry modifying the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\MSSQLServer
LoginMode = 2
key, where MSSQL.3 identifies your SQLExpress database engine or, more user friendly, you can use the SQL Server Management Studio Express graphical tool to modify the setting..
log in as a member of system administrator, select the Database Engine node in the Object Browser.. rx click->Properties.. in the "Security" tab select "SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode"..

when you are finished, select the Security->Logins node.. select the "sa" login, rx click->Properties.. set a strong password for this special super account.. in the "Status" tab, set "Login: Enabled" property...

restart the SQLExpress instance..

you can now add your own standard SQL Server logins as desired..

regards
