Installing the samples after an install

Hi,

I stupidly did not install the samples for 2005 when I installed the dev edition on my machines. Now I would like to. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a way to do it. The installation process always says I have the documentation installed (I have books online installed). It appears that there is no way to install the samples if you have installed the documentation and workstation items.

Is there somewhere I can download the samples?

1) Go to Add/Remove Programs
2) Click on the entry for SQL Server 2005 and click the Change button
3) Select "Workstation Components" and click Next (this will launch the feature in maintenance mode which allows you to add or remove components)
4) Follow the dialogs accepting the defaults.
5) On the "Change or Remove..." dialog select the "Change Installed Components" option.
6) On the "Feature Selection" dialog expand the "Documentation, Samples, and Sample Databases" node.
7) Select the samples you want installed (e.g. Sample Databases and/or Code Samples). Follow the dialogs to the end
- If your installing the Sample Databases you'll be prompted for an instance to connect them to.
- If your installing the Code Samples, this process drops the Code Sample MSI to your machine. You'll need to go to "Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Documentation and Samples -> Samples" and run "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Samples (English)" to install the actual code samples.

There are two instances: SQL2005 and SQL2005Express on two different units. While there is Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition also installed on the units have not attempted these component installs through either yet. Have spent the better part of two days, following all the directions having searched help locally, online, technet,and applied their advice respectively. While I've taken out the old instances, downloaded updated ones in both my SQL Server instances they do not show as installed under Programs->SQL Server (whichever instance)->Tutorials ...However they do show installed in Control Panel and they can be found via Explorer (AdWorks DBCI+AdWorks BICI and Express instance on the other unit. Have also download SP2 and installed it, but this has proved of no help. @. My wits' end, any help will be appreciated.

Documentation and sample databases are an option during installation.

Books Online appears as an installed program in Add/Remove Programs but the sample databases do not.

If AdventureWorks was installed with 2005 but did not appear in Object Explorer you can attach it. Attach is on the right-click menu of Databases in Object Explorer.

|||Thank you for your suggestion Lester, however before my initial post had already consulted books online, and downloaded the latest version to stay in sync with the software. Part of my frustration comes from following their directions but failing to achieve similar outcomes. Adventure Works databases are definitely resident on my computer, though not in the same directories in the Explorer file hierarchy indicated by the manuals/instructions. The directions have been exhaustively followed a number of times, replete with uninstalls then reinstalls - all to no avail. This is the case in both units, each with a different operating system and different version of SQL. Am still stymied.

installing the Northwind database

Hi I have just started using the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and wondering how to install the InstNwnd.sql from the sql file. I can't find any way to insert the database

server with 4Gb of memory? I believe that the standard
edition will only "support" 2Gb of memory, but does that
mean that it will only access 2Gb or that it is not
supported on a server with more than 2Gb? I cannot find
any documentation on this.It just means the relational server won't access more than 2GB of memory.
There is no problem running it on a 4GB server, or an 8GB server, or ...

I disagree and I think you have missed the point. I don't
think I am alone in this as I have read other postings
along the same line - I was hoping this time maybe I'd
receive a reference to a Microsoft document that is a
little clearer about what "support" means.
If SQL Server is configured to handle the memory
dynamically - rather than be allocated a fixed amount of
RAM - I would imagine it would be very important for it to
know how much memory is available on the server for other
processes.
I try not to be cynical, but I'm wondering if perhaps
there is a reason for the ambiguous documentation of the
memory capability - "Well I'm not real sure and I better
not take a chance, let's get the Enterprise Edition".

Installing SS2K5 error with Visual Studio 2K5

Hello,
I installed SS2K5 Developer edition and everything worked fine. Then I
installed Visual Studio 2K5. When I open SS2K5, I get the following error:
Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you
click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to
continue.

After I click Continue, the database opens...

I assume that when you means open SQL Server 2005 you are talking about SQL
Server Management Studio? Do other tools also display this message, can you
use SQL Profiler to see if it is within a SQL Command or if it is part of the
application. You may want to try loading Service Pack1 to re-install client
tools.

Would you please elaborate on the Date Format issue. That is the only thing
left for me to try before I start over. I have tried to reinstall SP1,
Removed Framework version 2.0, remove most of the excess service from SQL
2005 to no avail.
I have a Windows XP SP2 with multiple MUI installed. Office 2003, Visual
Studio 2005, SQL 20005. I upgraded from SQL 2000 SP3a. Any other ideas that
will get rid of this enoying pop-up? You know how it gets, it is like a
mosquito in my left ear that will not let me fall asleep.

The error message is most often (but not always) associated with problems
when the a date is not in the correct format, although re-looking at the
debug this may actually be a numeric conversion.
The suggestion to use SQL Profiler may have turned up something that would
have helped.
Have you tried rebuilding the registry?

I am willing to try to run SQL Profiler and rebuilding the Registry if that
will get me out of that error. This is what I have tried so far that have
failed:
1. Re-install SP1 for SQL 2001.
2. Un-install Framework 2.0.
3. Uninstall extra Service that were not needed that was installed as part
of the SQL 2005 installation.
It looks like a SQL error, however, it happens when the Management Studio is
starting. If we knew what was being read (System Stored Procedures, etc...)
that may be also a good place to start looking.
Can you elaborate on how to rebuild the registry?
Can you also tell me what to start in SQL Profiler? I launched it and
select to start a new trace and the same error generated.

I tried the instructions within these two links to no avail. I also tried
to completely remove SQL 2005 deleted all directories in Program Files and
registry keys and continue to get the error when I reinstalled SQL 2005
Developer Edition on Windows XP SP2. Is there any configuration files aor
any other areas that Management Studio is using to start that may be
generating this error? I am al a lost and have run-out of ideas...
