Installing/Configuration

Hi,

I'm

pretty new to this reporting services thing. I've installed it on my PC

and it runs fine. However, other PCs on my LAN can't access the reports

through their browser. I think there is an issue with IIS also involved

because they cannot even browse to the default website on my PC. There

may also be some security related issues as well (with IIS, Reporting

Services and my SQL Server 2005 database).

Is there any step

by step guide on how to configure all these three things properly for

remote access available that anyone can recommend?

Or can anyone give me advice?

Does the URL use the IP addy or machine name when they try to access the default website? If uses the machine name, try the IP address.

Are you on a workgroup or domain?

Can they ping your machine by name?

Is there an explicit error in the browser other than 404 not found?

What is the security model being used in IIS: Anonymous, IWA (integrated windows authentication)?

These are just a few questions to get us going in the right direction

to install WSS2 on a Windows 2003 server running SQL reporting? Thanks

state to be enabled. You don't need to edit the web.config file after
setting the Application Pool. The only downside to this is that Report
Manager preferences of list vs. details is not kept when session state is
off.

are in the exclusion list for SP.

Installing WSS on top of RS

Hi,
Until now, I only fount tutorials/howto's on installing Reporting
Services, after a WSS install.
In my situation, I have RS fully up & running, and I need to add WSS to
the same machine.
Which steps do I have to take? Can I use the same steps as in this

Bj=F6rnI think I've installed WSS on top of RS a few times. The only thing I can
think of that could mess up your Reporting Services, is if you add WSS to
the same application pool as the one the RS web sites are running in, and
then change the identity of this application pool.
If you just use a new application pool for WSS, this will not occur.
Also, if you're running RS 2005, using .NET Framework 2.0 and not 1.1, you
might want to be a bit carefull with doing things like aspnet_regiis, which
could mess up the version of .NET framework the web sites are running as.
The list from Microsoft should be usefull even if you're installing it the
other way. But I would actually do it on a test box before doing it on a
live box, just to make sure that what should work in theory does not work in
real life...

Though, I did it a little bit different. I created a new Application
Pool first, and then added the RS-sites to that new pool. After that I
installed WSS normally, and added the exclusions.

Installing VS .NET after Installing Reporting Services

I installed VS .NET after installing Reporting Services. When I bring up VS,
I don't see the Report Designer choices. What do I need to do to make them
appear?If you installed RS without VS.Net then what you installed is the server
piece. What you need to do now is install the report designer. Rerun setup
and install just the report designer.

Hi there,
I am trying to install reporting services on our server at work. It is a Win2k server OS, with SS2k on it. It does not have VS .NET installed. Is it possible for me to set up the server so that it is the central repository for all our reports and then develop and design the reports from my development box, which does have VS .NET installed? When I install SSRS on my development box it creates the Reports and ReportServer Virtual Directories on IIS but for the server it does not do this. Is there a way of moving these folders to the server from my development box or some way of getting this to work?
I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall at the moment, getting nowhere fast.
Please any help would be great.Yes, this configuration should work. One thing on your development box, you
should not install the server components, rather install the Report Designer
feature under the client components.

>|||I just replied to another mail you posted, but will duplicate here. On the
server box, you should just be getting a warning about VS not being
installed. You should continue past this and select to install the server
components and the Client tools (samples and BOL if you want them).
On the Dev boxes, only install the Designer component, BOL if you want each
Dev to have a local copy.

the report server's virtual directory to the default
website. The problem is, the default website's ip is
unassigned most of the time, and is frequently either
being configured differently for testing or is out of
commission most of the time. Now, there are other
websites on the server that I'd rather use, and I was
wondering if it is possible to create the report server's
virtual directory in a website other than the default
one?

Installing the SQL server 2005 beta tools problem

Hi everyone,
I do not have any issues with the installation of the server itself, or reporting services etc... but im having trouble installing the tools like the management studio, etc... I get an error syaing tat I need to do this from the add/remove programs, but its not there. Its like it thinks that its installed but its not...
Any ideas would be gratly appreciated

1) Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs
2) Select Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and click the Change button
3) In the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Maintenance wizard that appears, select the Workstation Components radio button and click Next
4) In the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup wizard that appears, click the Next button to move past the title page
5) Click Next to move past the system configuration check
6) Click the Change Installed Components button
7) Expand Client Compents in the tree and click on the Management Tools item, select "Will be installed on the local hard drive", and then click next
8) On the Ready to Update page, click Install|||Thank you very much, Ill give that a try tonight when I get home from work.

|||Are you talking about a CTP version of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (or Developer, etc.), or SQL Server Express? There should be tools in all the CTP versions of the up-level sku's. There are no tools included with SQL Server Express.

There is a free CTP download of SQL Server Management Studio Express available here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/ Look for the paragraph about a "Free Management Tool". Management Studio Express contains a subset of Management Studio functionality tailored for managing SQL Server Express servers.

A couple caveats:

Management Studio Express is a CTP, so there are still a few minor defects that remain to be fixed before it's officially released in the first half of 2006. If you find any issues, this forum is a great place to report them.

Management Studio Express does not run side-by-side with the full SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. If SQL Server 2005 Management Studio is installed on the same machine as Management Studio Express, Management Studio Express won't start correctly.

There is also a defect where installing the full SQL Server 2005 Books Online from a SQL Server 2005 CD causes Management Studio Express not to start. Besides the slip of the keyboard, which disk are you referring to? When I
try to use the Sql Server 2005 disk, the Reporting Services option is grayed
out (presumably because I don't have IIS installed on my workstation?).

Bob M..|||I do not not what kind of disk your SQL Server2005 is on. I have heard it
may be on 2 CDs or 1 DVD. Mine is from MSDN subscription, which has two
setup.exe - one for the server part and one for client tools part.
Whatever you have, you should install client components only, including
Connectivity components, Management tools, Business Intelligence Development
Studio (this is what you need!), SDK, documentation... You do not need to
install RS for report designing, unless you want to.

Installing SQL Server Reporting Services on SBS 2003 Premium for Dynamics CRM 3.0

We are currently in the process of performing a trial installation of Microsoft Dynamics CRM for a client. In amongst their existing IT infrastructure they have:
SBS 2003 SP1 PremiumServer 2003 StandardWhilst an organisation of their size would usually choose to deploy MS CRM Small Business, they've decided they don't want to install SBS on the same system as their SBS box and instead place it on their server 2003 and therefore we're attempting to install CRM Premium.

One of the requirements of Dynamics CRM 3.0 is SQL Server Reporting services (SRS).

SRS will not install on their server 2003 box, as unbeknownst to us initially, besides running Blackberry server, the machine also appears to be running a full blown instance of Terminal Services which SRS refuses to install alongside.. I even tried change user /install ... change user /execute and this failed.

Then I resolved instead to run SRS on the same machine as their SQLServer - the SBS box.

It didn't find visual studio - fair enough.. We don't want to customise any forms just yet.

It then complained about not being able to find ASP.net 1.1 and that sharepoint services were installed.. I read the notes on sharepoint/SRS co-installs and was satisfied there I knew what needed to be done..

I then attempted to install .net framework 1.1, but was advised it was already present. I then checked IIS manager and indeed ASP.net 1.1 was registered and enabled, whilst 2.0 ASP.net was also installed, but prohibited.

I reran the SRS install - and it still couldn't find ASP.net 1.1 and therefore has not installed the web components that MS Dynamics CRM 3.0 requires..

Could someone at least give me a pointer in the right direction here to getting it (SRS) installed happily?

Current machine Windows XP Pro with sp2. Successfully installed all portions
of Reporting Services with exception to Report Designer to SQL Server 2000.
The message which appears at almost the conclusion of installation states
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as
part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel
or package vendor.". Then it rolls back the installation.
Looking through the Event Logs it shows there was an error registered due to
the msvcr71.dll. The error value is:
Error value: C0000013
Disk type: 5
This file is on the CD for the Reporting Services and it should not be
damaged, in use, etc. by any other process other than that of the installer.
After installing all but the designer, I even installed service pack 1 for
Reporting Services and still have the same result.
Ideas?
Your thoughts on this matter will be appreciated.Just wanted to post the resolution to the situation below.
From the event log it showed that it had a problem with the msvcr71.dll.
Comparing the datetime of the file on the CD to that of the system, they were
different.
So I copied the contents of the CD to the hard drive to point to the older
file to see if it would help. The result, it did not help so I put the
original file from the CD back into the Reportin Services install directory
of my hard drive.
In reading other posts regarding installs, there was a file mentioned in the
01SEP2004 post by Daniel Reib [MSFT] to an 'install problem' (original
subject for posting), which was RSRun.msi.
I installed this file with Visual Studio .NET open and within a project. It
seemed to be having a problem without VS.NET being open, at least on 2
machines. In the past attempts the event log showed that it was having a
problem starting up the VS.NET and that is why I opened the application and
project while installing. The install was successful and the Report Designer
is working.
Hope this helps some other people that experienced a similar issue.

Installing SQL Server Reporting Services

Hi All,

I have just installed SQL Server Reporting Services and done the settings on Reporting Services Configuration.

The Server Status is 'green ticked' and it is Running, the Report Server Virtual Directory, Report Manager Virtual Directory, Windows Service Identity, Web Service Identity and Database Setup are all setup and 'green ticked'

But when I go to the Reports in IE:http://localhost/Reports I get the following error:

The report server is not responding. Verify that the report server is running and can be accessed from this computer.

I have googled this but do not seems to have a suitable solution for me. Please help.

From the error message you provided, do you run your Reporting Service on Vista?

Since Reporting Services SP1 and earlier do not run on Windows Vista, you need to install SP2 for reporting service.

First: Stop Reporting Services

Second: Restart IIS

Third: Start Reporting Services

Then try browsinghttp://localhost/reports and it worked.

Installing SQL Server 2005 SP1 fails

Hi,

Trying to install SQL Server 2005 SP1 on a windows 2003 box and it fails for database services and reporting services patch. It installs successfully other components of the patch.
Following errors are logged in the event log.
1) Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - Update 'Service Pack 1 for SQL Server Database Services 2005 ENU (KB913090)' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file C:\WINNT\Hotfix\SQL9\Logs\SQL9_Hotfix_KB913090_sqlrun_sql.msp.log

2) Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -- Error 29506. SQL Server Setup failed to modify security permissions on file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\ for user birendraa. To proceed, verify that the account and domain running SQL Server Setup exist, that the account running SQL Server Setup has administrator privileges, and that exists on the destination drive.
3) Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services -- Error 29561. SQL Server Setup failed to retrieve the SSL Certificate Name.
4) Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services - Update 'Service Pack 1 for SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 ENU (KB913090)' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file C:\WINNT\Hotfix\RS9\Logs\RS9_Hotfix_KB913090_sqlrun_rs.msp.log.

The account running SQL server setup has admin privileges on that box.
Kindly help me in this regard.

I'll take a shot at these...

1 & 4) These 1603 errors are tough to debug without the logs (and often even with the logs). These may go away after fixing the other two issues. Aaron's blog has a good explanation of them.

2) The problem is that there exists a file in this Data directory that the user running SP1 does not have permissions to modify. The workaround is to figure out which file this is (typically a user created DB or some backup program files) and to temporarily assign permission to that file(s). You can revert back to the intended permissions after running SP1.

integrated development environment for Reporting Services

Is there a development environment for Reporting Services (2005) that is integrated with source control?

You can use Visual Studio to develop reports and place them under source control. But as far as I can tell, you cannot implement security, scheduling, etc. through Visual Studio. For these you can use a second environment, e.g. SQL Server Management Studio - but is this environment integrated with TFS?

In other words, is there a single development environment, integrated with TFS, where you can develop all aspects of Reporting Services reports?

I wouldn't get all excited about using SQL Server Management Studio for that second set of tasks, since they have pretty much indicated that they would prefer to concentrate on making Report Manager and Sharepoint the tools for this purpose in Katmai. I think the Management Studio snap-in approach didn't give them the flexibility they wanted, it's kind of rigid.

Watusi (SSRS Management Tools Changes for Katmai)

For Katmai we are considering the removal of namespace management (folders,
reports, data sources, models) from the Reporting Services Add-in for SQL
Server Management Studio (SSMS). In other words, we are considering removing
the 'Home' folder under the Reporting Server node in SSMS.

Why the change?

Customer feedback and usage data indicates that Report Manager and/or
SharePoint are the tools of choice for managing the Report Server namespace,
rather than the SSMS add-in. The design constraints of SSMS mean that any
new namespace functionality is significantly expensive to implement,
specifically adding support for the namespace in SharePoint integrated mode.
For Katmai we want to invest in SharePoint and Report Manager for namespace
management and focus on SSMS as a server-level management tool.

This means that the namespace management functions that are not available in
Report Manager (Model ClickThrough and Model Item Security) will be added to
Report Manager (they are already in SharePoint). Job Management, configuring
System properties, and administering Roles will be moved to SSMS. In
addition, SSMS will be updated to work in SharePoint mode.
