Installing SQL Server Reporting Services on SBS 2003 Premium for Dynamics CRM 3.0

We are currently in the process of performing a trial installation of Microsoft Dynamics CRM for a client. In amongst their existing IT infrastructure they have:
SBS 2003 SP1 PremiumServer 2003 StandardWhilst an organisation of their size would usually choose to deploy MS CRM Small Business, they've decided they don't want to install SBS on the same system as their SBS box and instead place it on their server 2003 and therefore we're attempting to install CRM Premium.

One of the requirements of Dynamics CRM 3.0 is SQL Server Reporting services (SRS).

SRS will not install on their server 2003 box, as unbeknownst to us initially, besides running Blackberry server, the machine also appears to be running a full blown instance of Terminal Services which SRS refuses to install alongside.. I even tried change user /install ... change user /execute and this failed.

Then I resolved instead to run SRS on the same machine as their SQLServer - the SBS box.

It didn't find visual studio - fair enough.. We don't want to customise any forms just yet.

It then complained about not being able to find ASP.net 1.1 and that sharepoint services were installed.. I read the notes on sharepoint/SRS co-installs and was satisfied there I knew what needed to be done..

I then attempted to install .net framework 1.1, but was advised it was already present. I then checked IIS manager and indeed ASP.net 1.1 was registered and enabled, whilst 2.0 ASP.net was also installed, but prohibited.

I reran the SRS install - and it still couldn't find ASP.net 1.1 and therefore has not installed the web components that MS Dynamics CRM 3.0 requires..

Could someone at least give me a pointer in the right direction here to getting it (SRS) installed happily?

AnthonyI may have found your answer. I believe it's here: http://icu-mscrm.blogspot.com/2007/08/fix-for-weird-error-when-installing-sql.html

Installing SQL Server 2005 on same machine as an existing SQL Sever 2000 instance

Given than once SQL Server 2005 is installed, SQL Server Studio has tobe used instead of Enterprise manager, can both SQL 2000 and 2005 beused on the same machine, be it development or production? (The secondone to be installed probably would be a named instance.)
Any experiance of doing this or a pointer to a Microsoft recommendation would be appreciated.

The SQL Server 2005 Books Online (downloaded version) has a section onWorkingwith Multiple Versions of SQL Server which indicates that SQL 2005 canbe installed as a named instance alongside SQL Server 7 and/or SQLServer 2000.
Some feedback from where this has been done would be very much appreciated.
|||From various training material for SQL 2005, it would seem that it ispreferable to have at least 512 Mb of RAM above that required by theoperating system. Whilst it will install (with protest) on a machinewith a total of 256 Mb RAM, a minimum realistic amount of memory forits host server would be 1 Gb of RAM.

Installing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition alongside SQL Server?

I want to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on my laptop alongside an
existing version of SQL Server, to learn SS 2005. Is there anything in
particular I need to watch out for, to make sure my SS 2005 installation does
not interfere with the existing SS DBs? Thanks in advance for any guidance.Hi Robert
This should not be a problem, SQL Express and SQL Server 2000 can co-exist
as different instances. Running two instances will use more resources, so
make sure that your machine is going to have enough power to run both
instances and still do other work!
If you only occasionally need SQL 2005, then you may want to consider using
virtual machines.

Installing SQL Express SP1 with existing User Instances

Hi,

I've read the readme for the Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/d/1/bd1e0745-0e65-43a5-ac6a-f6173f58d80e/ReadmeSQL2005SP1.htm

But I'm not quite clear on what will happen if you currently have SQL Server Express 2005 installed with User Instances, and then you launch the installer for SP1.

Will it also update the User Instance? If so, how could I tell? When I go to the registry for the User Instance it has the older version value ie.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\[instance name]\MSSQLServer\CurrentVersion = 9.00.1399.06

Shouldn't it be saying 9.00.2047.00?

Does this mean that I have to uninstall the User Instance before installing SP1?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Sam

User instances work by cloning the actual instance at startup time, so as long as the main instance is updated then all should work.|||

User Instances are upgrade automatically as Euan says. You really shouldn't be using the registry to judge the success of an upgrade, it's complex and undocumented. You're not looking at the main Key for the SQL version installed.

Rather, after you perform the upgrade, go into the query tool of choice (Managment Studio, SQLCmd, etc.) and run the following:

SELECT @.@.version

This will return the Edition and Version of the server you connected to. If it is not 2047, then you didn't upgrade that Instance.

Mike Wachal

Hi Euan and Mike,

Your comments have been helpful.

What I found was that I actually hadn't upgraded our instance of SQL properly.

I've been using the command line for the SQL installer and worked out that the way for it to update the existing instance (and subsequent user instances) was to use

SQLEXPR.EXE /qb INSTANCENAME=<MyInstance> UPGRADE=SQL_Engine

Using these options for the installer I could confirm the upgrade both in the registry and more importantly using

SELECT @.@.version

Thanks

installing SP4 for SQL 2000 on a cluster node

Hello,
I recently added a new win2k3 node to an existing SQL cluster and installed
SQL Server 2000. The SQL installation for the new node was performed from
the active node.
I also installed SP4 from the active node. However, I am having SQL
connectivity issues when I fail over to the new node. I noticed that I get
the following event log on the new node. It thinks that SP4 is not installed
although it is. Does anyone know if SP4 should be installed from the passive
node (the new node)? Does it matter which node we run the SP4 installation?
Thank-you,
WG

I actually came across this article and it is helpful.
Could you tell me what is the "database upgrade script"? The article says,
for my scenario, I must run "the databse upgrade script".
Thanks,
