installtion program dies when installing Native Client

it's my laptop, i try to install sql server 2005. the installation program dies at the first stage.
the program seem cant finish the Native Client installation and stops for ever. theres no error msg.
the installation program works well on my desktop. does anyone knows what goes wrong?
Did you install any SQL Beta on the machine ? Then you will first have to deinstall and run the cleanup utility on your laptop. If not, try to install the SNAC client from a standalone installer.

Can you check C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Log\Summary.txt

and post the error message

Also go inside the subfolder files and look for _snac.log

Thanks

Installting SQL Server 2k5

I have SQL Server 2000 on Windows XP professional OS.
I want to install SQLServer 2K5?
Do I need to to uninstall SQLServer2K before installing SQLServer 2k5 ?
What steps should be taken before and after SQL Server 2K5 installation?
Thanks,Hi,
You should be able to install SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2000 side
by side.
I think you may need SP2 of XP Pro.
One important thing to watch out for is any old components left behind
by past builds of SQL Server 2005 or Visual Studio 2005. If they are
present you need to uninstall CAREFULLY and in the right order or you
can expect to hit problems.

Installing/Deploying Windows App with SQL Server 2005 CE

I am a little bit confused about making an installer/deployer.

I have an application using SQL Server 2005 CE (I have just updated to the most recent version Jan 2007). It will run on a new desktop PC (windows XP) if I install the SQL CE runtime and then copy the .EXE and the .SDF database file. This is great but my client wants the whole thing to install as one operation. I thought click once could do this but it seems that is only for Pocket PC targets? Can anyone point me to a method to make an appropriate installer please?

Pete

I am using the following:
SQLServerCE31-EN.msi - installer for SQL CE server runtime
SSCE31VSTools-ENU.exe - installed over VS 2005 SP1.Have you tried publishing it? - I have no problem doing this for standard apps.

In Brian Noyes' book "Smart Client Deployment with ClickOnce' there are several small sections on how to deploy CE

P235 "An example is the SQL Server 2005 CE CTP that is available at the time of this writing. You can download the .msi file to do and install of SQL Compact and you can also download the Bootstrapper Manifest needed to add SQL Compact to your Bootstrapper. If you are provided the Bootstrapper files, all you need to do is place the files in the right location."

I can recommend this book - written in a logical straightforward manner. Also covered is Deploying a (sic CE) Client Database with your Application (starting P 167)

Here is the video link from Steve Lasker's blog on CE deployment http://blogs.msdn.com/stevelasker/archive/2006/07/06/SQLServerEverywhereDeploymentOptions.aspx|||If you use something like Inno Setup you can just have the installer copy the SQL Server Compact Edition dll files to the application's folder. Then you won't have to worry about using the MSI file. Check the SQL Server Compact Edition Books Online for more.

Or, (still using Inno Setup) add the MSI file to the setup project and run it with the necessary options to install it right before the installation ends.
|||Great responses guys! I'll try everything you suggest and feed back here.

Pete|||Ok, thanks for the references to Steve Laskers blog. The screencast of deployment options gave me the information I needed. I have ended up using the VS Setup project to install the SQL CE dlls into the app folder and the GAC. That is great for me (I didn't want publish/deploy). I am sure Inno would have done the same but I don't have time to learn another setup app now (I've used NCIS as well in the past). Anyway, kudos to all of you and Steve Lasker and the MS Virtual PC people without which I would need 2 PCs to test all this...

Pete|||I should mention that it looks like just copying SQL Server Compact Edition's DLLs is not a way to do it anymore. I remember seeing it in the SQL Server Everywhere Edition Books Online but it seems to have been removed from the SQL Server Compact Edition Books Online. Just thought I shouldd mention this for anyone else who reads this thread.

Installing/Deploying a .dtsx package

Hi,

I used to write DTS Scripts in SQL Server 2000 and schedule them as jobs with out problem.

This was normally done within SQL Server its self.

Now that I've moved to using SQL Server 2005 I've been learning how to use SSIS.

I've successfully developed a package and managed to create a .dtsx file. Now I have 2 large books on the subject of SSIS but none seem to go into any detail on what to do next.

So here’s my newbie question (I apologise if I sound dumb!):

I don't want to run my package manually as the books keep telling me how to do.

I need to have my package added into SQL Server 2005 somehow and then schedule it as a reoccurring job.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Matt.

Have you tried this -

Deploying Integration Services Packages
(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/0f5fc7be-e37e-4ecd-ba99-697c8ae3436f.aspx)

In summary, there is the deployment "utility", which can be produced via the SSIS project in BIDS, or you can import packages to a server from within SQL Server Management Studio. For my money the best option is to just put the dtsx files on the server somewhere as files. How you do that is up to you, a manual copy for example, or perhaps get a bit clever and use an MSI.

To schedule the package, you can create a SQL Server Agent job in much the same way as before. Use SQL Server Management Studio, and create the job or write a T-SQL script. You can of course build the job in the tool and then script it too.

On point though is I much prefer to use a CmdExec job step type, and just call dtexec.exe with parameters over using the built in SSIS job step, as you can get better output from the former. So really you are just scheduling an exe.

Use DTExecUI.exe to help build the command line, but of course use DtExec.exe in the job itself.

This thread may also help -

Re: using sql server agent stored procedures to execute a package - MSDN Forums

Thanks,

I've read through the articles on those links with the most helpful being this package installation example :

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365344.aspx

I also think using the command line method that you mentioned sounds like a very good idea and the whole process seems simple.

So I've gone to use the SQL Server Agent set up and schedule a job and low and behold that has completely changed from the SQL Server 2000 version too!

However it does look good but means I still need some more reading yet before I can add my job in.

Thanks very much for your help.

Installing/Configuration

Hi,

I'm

pretty new to this reporting services thing. I've installed it on my PC

and it runs fine. However, other PCs on my LAN can't access the reports

through their browser. I think there is an issue with IIS also involved

because they cannot even browse to the default website on my PC. There

may also be some security related issues as well (with IIS, Reporting

Services and my SQL Server 2005 database).

Is there any step

by step guide on how to configure all these three things properly for

remote access available that anyone can recommend?

Or can anyone give me advice?

Thanks,

Frank

Does the URL use the IP addy or machine name when they try to access the default website? If uses the machine name, try the IP address.

Are you on a workgroup or domain?

Can they ping your machine by name?

Is there an explicit error in the browser other than 404 not found?

What is the security model being used in IIS: Anonymous, IWA (integrated windows authentication)?

These are just a few questions to get us going in the right direction

Installing, creating database, updating schema?

Hi there,

I have a database on my test machine that will need to be installed on users
machines. I would like to create the database with the given schema on the
users machine and also with some suitable default values in the tables. I
note that although I can script the schema so that re-creating the structure
of the database is simple on the users machine, I cannot script the contents
of the tables also (automatically). What I would like to do is take some
kind of "snapshot", save it as a script and then run this script in my
installer. Are there any tools available to do this?

Secondly and related to the above: if I subsequently make changes to the
database schema (adding or removing columns, altering, adding or removing
stored procedures etc.), how do I roll out those changes to a customer? Do
I need to hand code an "upgrade" script, or is there a tool that will
produce a "difference between" script I can run on the customers machine?

Thanks for any tips you can give me about this.

SQL Server MVP Vyas Kondreddi has a tool that generates INSERT statements
from a table: http://vyaskn.tripod.com/code.htm#inserts

There are several paths to take. Many people use a third-party tool that
compares two databases and then generates a script. Very popular is
SQL Compare from Red Gate. I have not used this tool myself, though.

A better approach in my opinion, is to have all code under source control.
In this case, your development database is not your master, but the
version-control system is. A basic version-control system will not
provide any update scripts for you, as a version-control system is a
general container for all sorts of code. What you do is that when you
ship, you set a label, and then you can later inquire the VCS for
changes since that label. There are plenty of VCS on the market. Very
popular among Microsoft customers is Visual SourceSafe which is part
of Visual Studio. VSS is not a very good for serious configuraton
management, but it's easy to get started with, and works perfectly OK for
smaller groups.

There are a couple of third-party tools that are specialized for doing
version control on SQL Server. Typically, they sit on top of SourceSafe
or some other generic VCS. Unfortunately, I don't recall any names right
now.

In our shop we use VSS, together with a toolset that includes tools for
loading stored procedures (with a lot of bells and whistles, like
automatic insert of SET NOCOUNT ON, WITH ENCRYPTION (on request),
automatic GRANT, a preprocessor). We also have a tool that builds
update scripts from the checkins in SourceSafe. The tool also maintains
its own tables in the target databases, so that we know in which state
each database is in. This toolset is available as freeware on
http://www.abaris.se/abaperls/. (I uploaded the latest version of it,
just the other day, by the way.)

Judging from your question, you may be best off with something like
SQL Compare in the short run. But if more people get involved with
your work, you should definitely consider to move to a version-
control system. There are a few things to keep in mind with updating
from a model database:

o A development may contain junk code and junk tables from tests and
experiments.
o A table change may be as simple as adding a nullable column, but it
can also be very complex if you are making a major restructiring. A
tool probably needs some help in this case.
o If you have preloaded data that you want to deploy, you need a tool
where you selectively can migrate data.

The way we handle pre-loaded data by the way, is to enter the data in
Excel books, and then we have a tool that generates INSERT files from
the the Excel files. The files does not contain any INSERT statements,
but calls to stored procedures which inserts or updates. The reason we
use Excel is that some of our files are quite complex. and we have
different settings for different customers.

Installing WSS2 on SQL server

MS provides information about how to install and run SQL Reporting

to install WSS2 on a Windows 2003 server running SQL reporting? Thanks
DanThe only recent change is that Report Manager no longer requires session
state to be enabled. You don't need to edit the web.config file after
setting the Application Pool. The only downside to this is that Report
Manager preferences of list vs. details is not kept when session state is

Installing WSS on top of RS

Hi,
Until now, I only fount tutorials/howto's on installing Reporting
Services, after a WSS install.
In my situation, I have RS fully up & running, and I need to add WSS to
the same machine.
Which steps do I have to take? Can I use the same steps as in this
link:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=3D/library/en-us/rsinstal= l/htm/gs_installingrs_v1_9fdy.asp
Thanks in advance!
Bj=F6rnI think I've installed WSS on top of RS a few times. The only thing I can
think of that could mess up your Reporting Services, is if you add WSS to
the same application pool as the one the RS web sites are running in, and
then change the identity of this application pool.
If you just use a new application pool for WSS, this will not occur.
Also, if you're running RS 2005, using .NET Framework 2.0 and not 1.1, you
might want to be a bit carefull with doing things like aspnet_regiis, which
could mess up the version of .NET framework the web sites are running as.
The list from Microsoft should be usefull even if you're installing it the
other way. But I would actually do it on a test box before doing it on a
live box, just to make sure that what should work in theory does not work in
real life...

Though, I did it a little bit different. I created a new Application
Pool first, and then added the RS-sites to that new pool. After that I
installed WSS normally, and added the exclusions.
Works fine!

Instead of the autorun, just trying running SETUP.BAT.

Setup.exe is a boostrap intaller for MSDE and accepts parameters you can
provide at the command line as long as in a companion .Ini file..
at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...stsql_84xl.asp
you can find the list of all supported parameters...
please open a DOS command window and navigate to the folder hosting the
setup.exe file...
there you can run setup.exe with all the parameters of your choice..
- usually you have to provide the SAPWD parameter to specify a strong
password for the "sa" builtin login in order to protect it from both
internal and external attacks..
specify then
SAPWD=your_strong_password
- additional parameters let you specify if you want a named instance or a
default instance... specify
INSTANCENAME=your_instance_name
if you want a named instance...
- another parameter let you specify if you want to allow remote connections
from other PCs in your lan to your MSDE instance.. specify
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0
if you need this feature...
- by default, MSDE is installed allowing only WindowsNT authenticated
connections and preventing standard SQL Server authenticated ones.. more on
this at http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;325022
you can specify
SECURITYMODE=SQL
to allow mixed mode security, thus allowing both WInNT integrated security
and standard SQL Server authenticated connections..
- the final important parameter is
/L*v "c:\msdelog.txt"
where you will allow verbose logging of the installation process, resulting
in a text file of about 2mb for a successfull installation you can inspect,
in case of problems, for
RETURN VALUE 3
entries... about 10 lines before each entry some (sometime cryptic)
description of the problwm will be reported..
so, if you like to install a "named instace" named "Raj" with mixed security
and enabled network protocols for remote connections you can run setup.exe
boostrap installer providing all parameters as
c:\..\>setup.exe /qb INSTANCENAME=Raj SECURITYMODE=SQL
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 SAPWD=your_strong_password /L*v "c:\msdelog.txt"
you can later manage your installed instance via the native character tool
oSql.exe as described at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q325003 or use a
third party tool, both commercial or free, like the ones listed at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/partners/ or
http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2442... google for further..

Installing Web Server and Database Server not in the same DOMAIN

Hello All,
I'm installing the RS using the "Standard Deployment Model" suggested
by BOL, which uses one Web Server as the Report Server and the Report
Manager and another as the Report Server Database.
According to BOL:
"The SQL Server instance hosting the report server database must be in
the same domain as the report server or in a trusted domain with the
report server."
Although, in my case, these two machines are not in the same domain,
neither could be. Is there any workaround for it'
It's quite urgent because while I was testing RS in DEV, wich has just
one machine, everything was fine, but now that I'm deploying RS to
Production, I realized that I don't have both Prd machines on the same
domain.
I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance,
Vinicius BellinoThe workaround is laid out right there -- create a domain trust.

and then one for SQL Server. My feeling is to have SQL Server on the web
server even if it is just as the object store (i.e. the data being reported
off of is somewhere else). SQL Server is very good at managing it's
resources and I have had no problem doing this.

Bruce,
I've thought about installing SQL Server in my Web Server as well, but
the only point was the supposed new SQL Server's license. Now I have
no more reasons not to do this. So, thank you!

Installing VS .NET after Installing Reporting Services

I installed VS .NET after installing Reporting Services. When I bring up VS,
I don't see the Report Designer choices. What do I need to do to make them
appear? If you installed RS without VS.Net then what you installed is the server
piece. What you need to do now is install the report designer. Rerun setup
and install just the report designer.

Installing Visual Web Dev. 2005 Express: Must uninstall ANY previous versions of SQL Server

Hello,
According to http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vwd/download/, I have to uninstall any and all versions of SQL before I attempt to install the VWD 2005 express edition. is there a work around this? I currently have SQL 2000 installed for my work; a must have for me, I can't just uninstall it.
(yes I left a similar question in the Visual forums, but haven't received any replies as of yet..just fishing for an answer here)
thanks so much, looking forward to giving VWD a test drive.

That warning was intended to have users remove any and all previous Betas of SQL Server 2005 prior to installing VWD Express.

It's okay to have MSDE or SQL 2000 on your box, or even to have SQL Server 2005 on your box. But if you have any of the SQL Server 2005 Betas or CTP installs, please remove them first.

Installing two instances of Report server

Can we install two instances of report server on the same machine?. We want to use the same hardware for two different methods of custom authentication. Both the server applications would then talk to the same database.

cvajre,

Here's a step by step way of implementing 2 reporting instances.

Installing to Server

Hi there,
I am trying to install reporting services on our server at work. It is a Win2k server OS, with SS2k on it. It does not have VS .NET installed. Is it possible for me to set up the server so that it is the central repository for all our reports and then develop and design the reports from my development box, which does have VS .NET installed? When I install SSRS on my development box it creates the Reports and ReportServer Virtual Directories on IIS but for the server it does not do this. Is there a way of moving these folders to the server from my development box or some way of getting this to work?
I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall at the moment, getting nowhere fast.
Please any help would be great.Yes, this configuration should work. One thing on your development box, you
should not install the server components, rather install the Report Designer
feature under the client components.

server box, you should just be getting a warning about VS not being
installed. You should continue past this and select to install the server
components and the Client tools (samples and BOL if you want them).
On the Dev boxes, only install the Designer component, BOL if you want each
Dev to have a local copy.
Hope that helps.

installing to another website

Hi,
I am trying to install Reporting Services on our web
server and one of the requirements says I have to install
the report server's virtual directory to the default
website. The problem is, the default website's ip is
unassigned most of the time, and is frequently either
being configured differently for testing or is out of
commission most of the time. Now, there are other
websites on the server that I'd rather use, and I was
wondering if it is possible to create the report server's
virtual directory in a website other than the default
one?
Thanks,
MarkThis article explains how to change the website that RS is hosted on.
