Instance specified not valid

Hi,

I'm trying to install MSDE SP3 which I downloaded from MS at http://www.asp.net/msde/.
Following the instructions as best I can I unzipped the file into a Folder now called MSDE located on C: I then went to a command prompt and typed in the command given to start the install:

setup SAPWD=testsite SecurityMode=SQL

Hit enter and the installer started up and ran for a few secs and then came back with

The Instance named specified is invalid

There was no mention of including an instance name or the format for it.

Suggestions please?

Also, if I want to completly uninstall MSDE if I need to how would I do it?

BobWell, I had this message come up if I tried to run setup for the instance that was already on the system.

I used this setup to install msde on my machine.

setup instancename="netsdk" sapwd="your password for sa" securitymode=sql

Reason for using instance name netsdk was that it seems that SDK kit needs this instance to install pubs and nwind database.

After executing this i did not get any error messages but when I started service manager I could not see any servers listed. It took me solid two hours to come up with idea to look into error log and there it was.

There is a line that says servername, I typed it in and I was able to start service. Log should be under c:\program files\microsoft sql server\mssql${your instance name}\log.

I am very new to windows world since I worked on Unix platform for past six years, so for you gurus out there this migth be something that does not need to be explained. Anyway I hope this helps.sql

ThankI'm not sure why that SDK needs an instance of SQL Server with that
particular name, but I'd have thought it would create the instance during
it's installation...
Anyway, to create a named instance of SQL Server, you have to install it
again & you get the chance to provide the instance name during the
installation process.

Instance Name of SQL Server 2005 Standard

I'm new to SQL Server, and have just started to work through the MS Press ADO.Net 2.0 Step-by-Step book.

In the beginning of the book, at the point where the Add Connection box comes up, it says to type in the Server Name text box, (local)\SQLEXPRESS, as the book takes for granted you have SQL Express installed, and hence this is the instance name.

I have Visual Studio 2005 Professional, and SQL Server 2005 Standard installed. What would the instance of SQL Server be in this case?

Any hope would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you specifically gave it a name during setup then there is no instance name as its a default instance, hence you connect with (local)|||

when you have installed sql server standard (for that matter any edition) you will be asked whether u want to install Default Instance or Named Instance. Default instance will have the same name of your Physical Machine name and named instances will have Machinename\Nameof the instance. Just to see whether you have any instances running , just open Command window

c:\ sqlcmd -L

you will get all the instances running in the network. check howmany instance are there with your physical machine name

The default instance name for non-Express editions is MSSQLSERVER. But as already mentioned, you can use the machine name to connect if using a default instance.... or you can use MSSQLSERVER.

I just tried using the above as the instance of SQL Server, and while the Add Connection dialogue didn't say anything about the instance being invalid, it did give me the following error: "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (Provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid)"

I guess this is progress in a way...

Any suggestions? Do I need to re-install SQL Server? I do have a couple icons which mention SQL Server Configuration Manager, and SQL Server Management Studio, would anything there help?

I have SQL Server Config Manager open now, however I'm clueless on what to do next, there really aren't many options.

On the left pane, under SQL Native Client Configuration, I see Client Protocols, and Aliases.

Under Client Protocols, the right pane shows: Shared Memory, Order 1, Enabled

TCP/IP, Order 2, Enabled

Named Pipes, Order 3, Enabled

VIA Disabled

Other than this, I really don't know what else to do...

Any help is appreciated...

check whether the server is enabled for Remote Connections. Go to Surface Area Configuration tool and check it. Also check firewall is enabled on this machine. if yes excempt TCP port 1433 and UDP 1434

There are many services listed on two tabs, standard and extended.

However, there is nothing listed that begins with SQL.

I have no idea what to do from here, sorry..

if there is no services running with name like SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) or SQLServer (SQLExpress) etc etc.. then you have only installed client tool. In this physical machine there is no Database Engine installed. Either re-install the sql server and choose what all are the services you need or connect to any other machine which already have sql server

Installing VS .NET after Installing Reporting Services

I installed VS .NET after installing Reporting Services. When I bring up VS,
I don't see the Report Designer choices. What do I need to do to make them
appear?If you installed RS without VS.Net then what you installed is the server
piece. What you need to do now is install the report designer. Rerun setup
and install just the report designer.

Installing to Server

Hi there,
I am trying to install reporting services on our server at work. It is a Win2k server OS, with SS2k on it. It does not have VS .NET installed. Is it possible for me to set up the server so that it is the central repository for all our reports and then develop and design the reports from my development box, which does have VS .NET installed? When I install SSRS on my development box it creates the Reports and ReportServer Virtual Directories on IIS but for the server it does not do this. Is there a way of moving these folders to the server from my development box or some way of getting this to work?
I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall at the moment, getting nowhere fast.
Please any help would be great.Yes, this configuration should work. One thing on your development box, you
should not install the server components, rather install the Report Designer
feature under the client components.

>|||I just replied to another mail you posted, but will duplicate here. On the
server box, you should just be getting a warning about VS not being
installed. You should continue past this and select to install the server
components and the Client tools (samples and BOL if you want them).
On the Dev boxes, only install the Designer component, BOL if you want each
Dev to have a local copy.

components. I now need to create a installer for my app. I wnat to a void
having to run sqlxml.msi separatly. Is there an easy way to avoid this?
Is there a merge module I can use? if not what files ect. do I need to

I installed a version of VS.NET 2005 RC and on it it says it installed SQL Server Express 2005.

But, I dont see it anywhere on my system.the only thing is see new on my system related to SQL Server is:
SQL Server 2005 CTP. What is this (what is CTP)? And only a subfolder 'configuration tools' under it.

Did I install the wrong thing? I was expecting like a beta version of SQL Server 2005.

SQL browser is not starting in the local machine mode. It searches for some time and comes back with a data provider not enabled message. What should I do ?

First of all note that SQL Server Express 2005 is different from SQL Server 2005. SQL Server 2005 is the mainstream product and SQL Server Express 2005 is the lightweight free product which is meant as a replacement for MSDE.

So, if you want SQL Server 2005, then you would need to download the September CTP of SQL Server 2005 from here :
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/2005/productinfo/ctp.mspx

Now for the CTP badge - CTP stands for Community Technology Preview. Here is a bit of explanation on a CTP build from Microsoft:

"The CTP builds are not for everyone. Because our goal is to offer these builds as they are ready, very little effort is put into stabilizing them or ensuring their quality. Typically, our Beta and released products go through a rigorous testing and quality assurance process before they become available. These interim Community Technology Preview builds do not go through this process. It is very likely that removing the build will introduce significant instability to your installed system and may even cause you to need to reformat your drive. CTP,Books Online, Samples and upgrade advisor.
Now, I want to install SQL 2005 Developer Edition. Search on this

stuff first. I went to add/remove programs and found this componets
are installed on my machine. Beside SQL Server 2000 I have SQL Server
2005, MS SQL Server management studio express, 2005 Books online, 2005
upgrade advisor, SQL Server vss writer, SQL server native client and
SQL Server set up support files.
Question is what should I remove without adversely affecting SQL 2000
installed on my machine?None of the ones you listed should affect SQL Server 2000.

Now, my question is how can I create a "all-in-one" installation procedure/file that will install both the SQL server (engine + db) and my application?

The failure code -2146893052 is 0x80090304. Some results on the Internet mentions firewall blocking the SQL Server TCP port, but since you are connecting to the local machine it should not be a problem. I also heard of out of memory scenarios causing this error to be raised.

I think it would be helpful if you can mention the environment setup you are running the app under. Also, which SQL Server 2005 edition on you using?

Some things you may consider trying:

On the same machine, try running the "sqlcmd" tool that comes with SQL Server 2005 to see if you get the same error

sqlcmd -Slocalhost -E

I'm building a reporting server that will grab data off of a an old HP3000, all of that is being done in a background task (non asp.net) and uploaded to an sql server.

I'm using a web interface to allow people within the company to view the data. This will be in a single domain, behind a firewall, and will not be accessable from outside of the company.

In IIS, I have anonymous login unchecked and only Integrated Windows Auth checked. The pertinate parts of my web.config look like this:

Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.

I'm at a loss as to how to fix this. I dont really want each user to have to enter any log in information, frankly, the permissions dont even matter in this case. My main problem is with the sql connection and trying to get adequate permissions to run queries.

Any help would be apprieciated

<deny users="?" /> denyANONYMOUS user. Ifthe permissions dont even matter and you dont really want each user to have to enter any log in information, then you can remove this <deny users="?" /> in web.config <authorization> section.

This all gets back to the security problem with the sql connection. It generates error messages when it gets to the sqlCommand.Fill(dataset) part. If I dont do some kind of authentication, the sqlconnect returns an error message. I just need enough permissions to connect to the sql server

Integrate Reports in ASP.Net Web Form

Hi,
I have my reports at http:\\localhost\ReportServer and need to use them in
ASP.NET Web Form.I have a few questions reg. this
--> I want to generate a PDF when a button labeled "Generate Report" is
clicked"
(1) I tried this using the below code:
Dim myResponse As Byte()
Dim url As String = http://localhost/reportserver?/Reports/Sales
Invoice&ORDER_ID=1879&rs:Format=PDF
Dim myWebClient As New WebClient
myWebClient.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials
myResponse = myWebClient.DownloadData(url)
Response.ContentType = "application/pdf"
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=Sales
Invoice.PDF")
Response.BinaryWrite(myResponse)
But got the error "The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden"
I have included "<identity impersonate="true"/>" in Web.Config File.
This Error is because the Credentials is null. I don't know why the
credentials are null even after I use myWebClient.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials
The same code works if I Create new Credentials specifying UserName and
Password. But I am cannot specify Username and password. The Application has
take the credentials from the server.
(2) Why can't I use the following one line of code(This works, I want to
know are there any kind issues with
this)Response.Redirect(http://localhost/reportserver?/Reports/Sales
Invoice&ORDER_ID=1879&rs:Format=PDF)
(3) What are other ways to integrate reports with ASP.NET Web Form.
(4)I need to deploy the Reports that I created in my machine to the server
I tried to deploy setting TargetServerURL=http://servername/ReportServer in
Project Properties, but got the error
"The permissions granted to user are insufficient for performing this
operation". What kind of permissions are required.
(5)What are different ways to deploy Reports on a Server.It sounds like you are running into the double hop issue. You can not make
an impersonated call to another machine if you are currently impersonated,
unless the machines trust one another. You would need to set up Kerberos to
get the machines to trust each other.

>|||For deploying you should have rights in the report server to deploy report.
Log on to the machine to which you are tryiong to deploy , open the report
manager and under security add yourself as a user with deployment rights.
Reponse.Redirect works fine for me. also have you tried using report viewer
