I have an issue with trying to install SQL 2005 standard on my XP machine.
I get an .hta file that is not readable and when I btpass that I get a
pop-up message:
please go to the control panel to install and configure system components.
WTF?
PLease assist...

From where did you get the media? Was it a download? Did you buy a
CD/DVD?
If Autorun does not set in, splash.hta is indeed the file to click to
get it going.
Note that you need IE6 SP1 to install SQL 2005. (And SP2 of Windows XP.)
I know I once tried to run the install on a machine with only IE5 - the
splash.hta produced a bunch of cryptc error messages instead of telling
me just to keep out.
If the file is entirely unreadable, it appears that you have bad
media, and you should get a replacement.

In addition to the points that Erland made, assuming your disk
structure is the same as I have seen, navigate to the Servers and/or
Tools folders and run Setup.exe. Gets round the .hta problem, as far
as I am aware.
