Installing SQL Server 2005 Standard on 2nd HD

I have a computer with a 40GB HD as the original and added a 2nd 200GB later (formatted with 2 partitions, 160GB and 40GB).

Before I added the 2nd HD, I installed SQL Server 2000 Developer on my machine.
I also have VS 2003 Pro and VS 2005 Standard installed (most files are on the 2nd HD) along with SQL Server 2005 Express.

When trying to install SQL Server 2005 Standard it would not let me change the location of the install to be on my E: drive. I am trying to do the setup on the 2nd HD to keep approximately 25% of the original (C:) drive free.

Do I need to uninstall the previous versions of SQL Server in order to change the install location? If so, what is the best order for the uninstalls (I am assuming SQL Server 2005 EXP first then SQL Server 2000)

Thanks in advance for any reply

You can change the location for some things, but not the entire installation. For instance, the management tools require ~1.6GB on your system drive for installation of shared components.

|||Hi,
I also came across this problem with sql server swamping up lots of space on c:, it's very annoying.
Does anyone know of any workaround to be able to install all of sql server on a alternate drive?

cheers,

Hi Johan,

It's impossible to put all of SQL Server 2005 on an alternate drive, but after uninstalling SQL 2000 from my C: drive I was able to put a lot of the files on my E: drive

That saved a good deal of space from my boot drive.

Hope this helps.

Mike

|||Hi,
Thanks for the answer. Then I guess I will have to find some other ways to free up space on the c-drive.

Cheers,
Johan
