Instance failure.

why I am getting (Instance failure.) when trying to connect to sql server from the web.config connectionstring..

the web.config entry is :

<connectionStrings>

<addname="website_connectionstring"connectionString="Data Source=.\\SQLEXPRESS;initial catalog=zatoor;integrated security=true"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

<!--

<remove name="website_connectionstring"/>

<add name="website_connectionstring" connectionString="Server=whsql-v21.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net;Database=DB_143379;User ID=zatoor;Password=Mujtaba2007;Trusted_Connection=False" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

-->

</connectionStrings>

the code is :

sql_connection =newSqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["website_connectionstring"].ToString());

sql_connection.Open();

It looks you have provided wrong data source .. to confirm this login to sql management studio and check it should be

YouMachineName\SQLEXPRESS confirm the same and update the connectionString

This will solve the problem

Instance confusion

I have built an application in web developer that has a sql data base in the App_Data

folder. It works locally fine.

I have uploaded it to my web host client successfully and it all displays. The web host is enabled

for asp.net. But the sql data base is not working...no information is getting from the web application into

my instance of sql in App_Data.

My web host has given me an e:/webs/mywebsitename.com/data/nameofdb.mdf

to alter in my web config connection string which I have done, but still not working.

I have also tried every version of this in connection string without success

Im just confused about the e: part............how is that going to get to my App_Data?

Can someone give me a quick overview of what the problem might be

Installing Web Server and Database Server not in the same DOMAIN

Hello All,
I'm installing the RS using the "Standard Deployment Model" suggested
by BOL, which uses one Web Server as the Report Server and the Report
Manager and another as the Report Server Database.
According to BOL:
"The SQL Server instance hosting the report server database must be in
the same domain as the report server or in a trusted domain with the
report server."
Although, in my case, these two machines are not in the same domain,
neither could be. Is there any workaround for it'
It's quite urgent because while I was testing RS in DEV, wich has just
one machine, everything was fine, but now that I'm deploying RS to
Production, I realized that I don't have both Prd machines on the same
domain.
I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance,
Vinicius BellinoThe workaround is laid out right there -- create a domain trust.

and then one for SQL Server. My feeling is to have SQL Server on the web
server even if it is just as the object store (i.e. the data being reported
off of is somewhere else). SQL Server is very good at managing it's
resources and I have had no problem doing this.

Bruce,
I've thought about installing SQL Server in my Web Server as well, but
the only point was the supposed new SQL Server's license. Now I have
no more reasons not to do this. So, thank you!

Installing Visual Web Dev. 2005 Express: Must uninstall ANY previous versions of SQL Server

Hello,
According to http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vwd/download/, I have to uninstall any and all versions of SQL before I attempt to install the VWD 2005 express edition. is there a work around this? I currently have SQL 2000 installed for my work; a must have for me, I can't just uninstall it.
(yes I left a similar question in the Visual forums, but haven't received any replies as of yet..just fishing for an answer here)
thanks so much, looking forward to giving VWD a test drive.
Ron Malizia
rmalizia@.co.grays-harbor.wa.us

That warning was intended to have users remove any and all previous Betas of SQL Server 2005 prior to installing VWD Express.

It's okay to have MSDE or SQL 2000 on your box, or even to have SQL Server 2005 on your box. But if you have any of the SQL Server 2005 Betas or CTP installs, please remove them first.

installing to another website

Hi,
I am trying to install Reporting Services on our web
server and one of the requirements says I have to install
the report server's virtual directory to the default
website. The problem is, the default website's ip is
unassigned most of the time, and is frequently either
being configured differently for testing or is out of
commission most of the time. Now, there are other
websites on the server that I'd rather use, and I was
wondering if it is possible to create the report server's
virtual directory in a website other than the default
one?
Thanks,
MarkThis article explains how to change the website that RS is hosted on.

Installing SSRS report designer with Visual Studio 2005

I have VS 2005 installed on my workstation. I have Sql Server 2005 on a
database server, and
just installed Reporting Services on a web server.
How do I install the Report Services report designer on my workstation in VS
2005?
thanks,
Bob M..Just place the dick into drive of your computer and start installation.
During the installation, you can choose to install client tool only.

Besides the slip of the keyboard, which disk are you referring to? When I
try to use the Sql Server 2005 disk, the Reporting Services option is grayed
out (presumably because I don't have IIS installed on my workstation?).
thanks,
Bob M..|||I do not not what kind of disk your SQL Server2005 is on. I have heard it
may be on 2 CDs or 1 DVD. Mine is from MSDN subscription, which has two
setup.exe - one for the server part and one for client tools part.
Whatever you have, you should install client components only, including
Connectivity components, Management tools, Business Intelligence Development
Studio (this is what you need!), SDK, documentation... You do not need to
install RS for report designing, unless you want to.

Installing SSRS 2005 in web server and cluster environment.

Hi,

I am installing SSRS 2005 with the following scenario:

- Report Server and Report Manager will be installed on web server

- The repository databases (ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB) will be hosted in SQL2005 cluster server.

Both servers are running Win2003 SP1, SQL/SSRS 2005 SP1

When I try to browse the ReportServer virtual directory from IIS on the web server, the system keep asking username and password. After 3 times trials and it failed eventhough the username and password is correct.

The error message is:

HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

I've been searching on the web and found couple of articles talking about this issue. I've tried some of them like: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887993 or even this one: http://groups.google.ca/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.reportingsvcs/browse_frm/thread/991c9178ceab8f58/8f1a447aa60ad837?lnk=st&q=reporting+services+the+server+is+not+responding&rnum=3&hl=en#8f1a447aa60ad837

But this doesn't work.

I've checked both event viewer both web server and SQL server, but I can't see any information that tell me what had happened.

I also look at BOL, but doesn't help much.

Is there anyone can help me or point me to the right direction? Is there any guide document that explains step-by-step how to install SSRS in my scenario or similiar?

Many Thanks,

Usman Tjiudri

I have the exact same issue in a identical envirnonment configuration. Did you get this resolved?

I`m looking at a few articles re Kerberos....

|||Hi,

Yes, finally I got this issue resolved.
After looking for answer almost everywhere, I finally turn to Microsoft Support and they gave me a very quick response (less than 24 hours).
Before I talk about the solution, I need to clarify something here - my environment is Win2003 Server R2 (not Win2003 SP1 as mentioned in previous email) - may be there's a SP1 for R2.
The issue is caused by IIS. Apparently R2 has different version of IIS with normal Win2003 Server.
You need to uninstall completely IIS on your server (may be you need to backup IIS metadata) and install IIS for R2. You can get the software from R2 disc.
If you still can't solve the issue, log it to Microsoft Support.

Let me know how it goes.

Hope This Help,

Installing SSL on SQL Server 2000

previous Message:
Hello Kevin,
I've have installed an Enterprise Root CA on the domain, and I went through
the web form to request and install a new certificate. I installed both an
Administrator certificate and a Web Server certificate, but when I choose
to Force Encryption from the Server Network Utility, I get an error message
when I try restarting SQL Server.
The message says something to the effect that encryption is being
requested, but a valid certificate does not exist. I can see the
certificate in the Personal folder, so I'm not sure why I'm getting the
error message.
Can you help?
Thanks,
Jason
--
We use exactly the same certificate that IIS would use to setup a SSL
session. The new error message above indicates that the SQL Server service
account is not finding the certificate. So, look at the account that is
starting the MSSQLServer service. If the service is started using a domain
user account, and the certificate was requested by a local admin, then the
service will not be able to find the certificate.

The MSSQLServer service is running under a domain user

therefore request another certificate while I'm logged in
as the user running the MSSQLServer service? Also, which
template should I use when requesting the certificate,
Administrator or Web Server?

This error indicates the following.
- NTE_BAD_KEYSET (0x80090016)
- Key container does not exist.
- You do not have access to the key container.
- The Protected Storage Service is not running.
Since you're attempting to set this up in a workgroup, you'll need to have

You'll need to follow the steps in this kb article:

After installing the certificate on the server you should be able to view

able to verify that your certificate is valid.

I had the same problem and found out that it was an unregistered component (dont know why it wasn't registered ok, an installation issue on my XP Pro machine perhaps).
Anyway if you manually register (using regsvr32) sqldmo.dll (find in C:\Program Files\System32) that should solve the problem, it did mine.

Installing SQL Server Web Data Administrator

On the SQL Server Web Data Administrator page (see last line in this note),
it states that the following are requirements:
Microsoft SQL Server 7 SP2 or later
Microsoft .NET SDK or Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)
1. Can I use MSDE 2000 instead of SQL Server 7 SP2?
2. Can I use the free copy of ".NET Framework SDK Version 1.1" from Microsof
t or do I need a more costly, expanded version?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
Thank you,
AFGHi,
1. You can use SQL Web Data Administrator with MSDE 2000
2. You can use the .NET Framework SDK Ver 1.1

Installing SQL Server 2005 fails

I have been trying to install Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition and SQL Server 2005. The Web Developer installs ok but the SQL Server installation fails. I can't figure out why. I have (I think...) uninstalled my previous beta intallations. The must be something else that prevents the installation. Can anyone point me to some FAQ or something that can give me some ideas on how to handle the installation.
/andersI would first try a fresh install with no other SQL Sever productsinstalled. Also log the installation and post the log file.

Installing SQL Server 2005 Express edition

I have Visual Web Developer 2005 Express edition and I wanted to install SQL Server 2005 Express edition.

From this page, I have downloaded and installed 'Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition'and'Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

After the installation, how should I access the SQL Server 2005 Express edition?

Because the only thing listed in 'Start > All Programs > SQL Server 2005' is 'Configuration Tools'

I was hoping that when I install SQL Server 2005 express edition, I would get all the menu that I get by installing SQL Server 2000.

So after installing SQL Server 2005 Express edition, what should I be expection? Thanks

SQL Server 2005 Express will work inside VS2005, you can go to database and create a new database now, give it a try!|||

Installing SQL Server 2005 Express

Hi, I have installed the Visual Web Developer 2005 trial IDE. The installation also came with SQL Server 2005 Express. I have used other versions of SQL Server in the past and have been able to navigate the databases, use Query Analyzer etc.

In the current (SQL Server 2005 Express edition) installation all I have is a program group named "MS SQL Server 2005">"Configuration Tools">"SQL Server Configuration Manager", "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting" and "SQL Server Surface Area Configuration".

My question is 'Have I not completed the installation?". How do I create databases?

Thanks in advance for your help!

*shiku

SQL Server 2005 Express does not come with Query Analyzer and Enterprise Manager. It's like MSDE. You can create a database from within Visual Studio (see View menu, Server Explorer) or try this download from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=82AFBD59-57A4-455E-A2D6-1D4C98D40F6E&displaylang=en (though it's not the final version, it worked fine for me)

Integrated security for web apps

We have setup IIS and SQL Server for integrated security which works fine as
long as SQL Server is on the same box as IIS.
Is it possible to use the Windows login security credentials that IIS
captures to access SQL Server when it is on a different box?
Many Thanks. If you're using NT Challenge Response and Trusted Authentication, you're
problem is documented here.

Depending on the requirements and your environment, if you want to pass the
credentials from the web user to IIS to SQL, then
you'll need to be in a Windows 2000 AD environment and use Security
Delegation to make this work.

always under the impression that AD was not a good idea. The main issue we
found was getting the connection string right, and making sure the users are
syncronized between the machines. We created the IUSR on the SQL box with
the same password as on the IIS box. Make sure to either get or change the
IUSR password in the Meta base, Local Users/Groups and not sure if it's the
same as the meta base but changed it in the ISM as well.

Integrated Auth vs SQL Auth

I know integrated Auth is preferred, but how does one use integrated auth
for web applications when customers are external ?
I know we can have integrated auth for internal customers where all these
customers have a valid domain account and we can add these domain accouts as
logins to SQL
How does one set up integrated auth for external customers coming thru the
front end web application ?
Is SQL Auth not secure and not recommended by MS ? When would one use SQL
Auth ?
Thanksif its through an ASP.Net application, then you can use the delegation.
the user is authenticated at the web level, then using the impersonation
feature of the ASP.NET the web delegates the user for database access.
if your database server & web servers are on 2 separete servers, then you
have to made some configuration in your active directory.
(If you use Basic authentication for the web access, this config is not
required)
you have to setup the Kerberos delegation.
search for kerberos delegation with IIS under on the microsoft web site to
found more information.

-If you have many customers I wouldn=B4t prefer Windows authentication
on a user basis as a good approach, because you have to maintain the
users in your active directory (create, alter, etc) and the most worst
thing, you have to buy Windows CALs as well as SQL Server CALs (if you
don=B4t have a processor licence for the server).
-If you want to accomplish the authentication via using a service
Windows account which can be authentication in the WIndows Domain and
usally the Webserver is running on I can tell you that this is a very
common approach. But remember that even only 1 (Windows) User is
accessing the SQL Server you have to get appropiate SQL Server Cals OR
or processor licence for the SQL Server machine.
"How does one set up integrated auth for external customers coming thru

-YOu can setup the web server to use basis authentication for
connection made from outside the intranet. Though this is basis
authentication you should use a SSL Certificate to encrypt your data,
otherwise data (Username / password) "could" be compromised over the
internet.
"Is SQL Auth not secure and not recommended by MS ? When would one use

-SQL Server Auth is for example used when you don=B4t have a Active
Directory, if you handle your security within your application and
therefore only have to access via one user, if you have plenty of time
maintaining twice users and groups if you plan to administer them on a
per user basis.

Auth ?
Thanks
if its through an ASP.Net application, then you can use the delegation.
the user is authenticated at the web level, then using the impersonation
feature of the ASP.NET the web delegates the user for database access.
if your database server & web servers are on 2 separete servers, then you
have to made some configuration in your active directory.

-YOu can setup the web server to use basis authentication for
connection made from outside the intranet. Though this is basis
authentication you should use a SSL Certificate to encrypt your data,
otherwise data (Username / password) "could" be compromised over the
internet.

-SQL Server Auth is for example used when you don=B4t have a Active
Directory, if you handle your security within your application and
therefore only have to access via one user, if you have plenty of time
maintaining twice users and groups if you plan to administer them on a
per user basis.

Integrate Reports in ASP.Net Web Form

Hi,
I have my reports at http:\\localhost\ReportServer and need to use them in
ASP.NET Web Form.I have a few questions reg. this
--> I want to generate a PDF when a button labeled "Generate Report" is
clicked"
(1) I tried this using the below code:
Dim myResponse As Byte()
Dim url As String = http://localhost/reportserver?/Reports/Sales
Invoice&ORDER_ID=1879&rs:Format=PDF
Dim myWebClient As New WebClient
myWebClient.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials
myResponse = myWebClient.DownloadData(url)
Response.ContentType = "application/pdf"
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=Sales
Invoice.PDF")
Response.BinaryWrite(myResponse)
But got the error "The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden"
I have included "<identity impersonate="true"/>" in Web.Config File.
This Error is because the Credentials is null. I don't know why the
credentials are null even after I use myWebClient.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials
The same code works if I Create new Credentials specifying UserName and
Password. But I am cannot specify Username and password. The Application has
take the credentials from the server.
(2) Why can't I use the following one line of code(This works, I want to
know are there any kind issues with
this)Response.Redirect(http://localhost/reportserver?/Reports/Sales
Invoice&ORDER_ID=1879&rs:Format=PDF)
(3) What are other ways to integrate reports with ASP.NET Web Form.
(4)I need to deploy the Reports that I created in my machine to the server
I tried to deploy setting TargetServerURL=http://servername/ReportServer in
Project Properties, but got the error
"The permissions granted to user are insufficient for performing this
operation". What kind of permissions are required.
(5)What are different ways to deploy Reports on a Server. It sounds like you are running into the double hop issue. You can not make
an impersonated call to another machine if you are currently impersonated,
unless the machines trust one another. You would need to set up Kerberos to
get the machines to trust each other.

Log on to the machine to which you are tryiong to deploy , open the report
manager and under security add yourself as a user with deployment rights.
Reponse.Redirect works fine for me. also have you tried using report viewer
