Installing Sql25k client without using CD/DVD?

Hi everyone,

We've found some problems when trying such thing. It seems that is compulsory to do via own CD/DVD.

Any comment would be very appreciated.

How are you trying to do the install? If you share out the DVD/CD to a network drive and maintain the folder structures from the media, you should be able to install just fine.

Installing SQL Server Express 2005 via Remote Desktop

Hi,

Does anyone know if it's at all possible to install SQL Server Express 2005 over a Remote Desktop on a Windows XP machine.

I know there are problems running SQL over Remote Desktop, in that it won't start up a User Instance, but I wasn't sure if we can install over Remote Desktop.

If it's not possible, can anyone point me to an official document stating this fact?

Yes, this is most certainly possible. If you encounter an error during install, please share the logs (%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Log)so we can take a look.|||

I've just been able to confirm that installing SQL via Remote Desktop is possible.

Our application requires user instances, and so after installation I then tried running our application via Remote Desktop. However, it came up with an exception "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server..."

I then went directly onto the remote machine and ran our application, and it worked perfectly fine.

So remote installation was fine, but running remotely with user instances is a problem.

I downloaded and successfully installed SQL Server 2000 Desktop edition via
"MSDE2000A.exe".
Then, thinking I needed "sql2ksp3.exe" to install Enterprise Manager, I
attempted to install that.
But, I got an error message: "SQL Server 2000 is not installed on this
machine. Setup will now exit".
So, obviously the error message is wrong, as I did install SQL Server 2000.
So, don't know what to do.
One thing that may be affecting this is that when doing the S.S. 2000
install, I had to do it via a DOS window in order to set a flag for what's
called an "SA" password. And I was thinking that maybe that's affecting the
subsequent attempt to install Enterprise Manager?
I'm running WinXP Professional with SP2 on my PC.
A thought...since I really don't have SQL Server 2000 installed, but instead
the Desktop version, maybe "sql2ksp3.ext" is the wrong file?

You installed SQL Server 2000 Desktop (MSDE). That is not the same as the
"proper" SQL Server (Standard and Enterprise).

If you want Enterprise Manager, you'll need to buy SQL Server. The
Desktop/MSDE version doesn't come with a GUI management tool. I'm not sure
if the SQL Server Express 2005 Management Studio GUI will work with Desktop
2000, if it does then you could use that.

I tried the link again and can get access the web. The sql2kdesksp3.exe
package for downloading locates under the page below.
I recommend that you check wheter or not the url is devided into two lines.
If so, you need to combine the two lines into one line url.
You can install SQL Enterprise Mnager with MSDE2000, however, you need to
install it with named instance.
It's only allowed only one default instance installed on one server.

If you want Enterprise Manager, you'll need to buy SQL Server. The
Desktop/MSDE version doesn't come with a GUI management tool. I'm not sure

Now, my question is how can I create a "all-in-one" installation procedure/file that will install both the SQL server (engine + db) and my application?

SQL Server Express doesn′′t use merge modules anymore. It uses now the msi pakcage functionalty which is described in the help of Visual Studio, its like configuring any other MSI package within a setup project to deploy.

Installing Sql Mobile via CAB file

Hi guys,

wonder if someone can help? I have written an app the runs on PocketPC 2003 and uses CF 2 and Sql Mobile 2005. I need to be able to install my application and Sql Mobile from within a desktop app. This is what I am doing, but I have a few questions:

Using RAPI I copy over to the device; myApp.CAB and sqlce30.ppc.wce4.armv4.CAB.
Using RAPI I then run wceload on these two CAB files.

This works a treat, both application install properly and work!!

But, in the same directory as the sqlce30.ppc.wce4.armv4.CAB (in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SmartDevices\SDK\SQL Server\Mobile\v3.0\wce400\armv4) there are two other CAB files:

sqlce30.dev.ENU.ppc.wce4.armv4.CAB
sqlce30.repl.ppc.wce4.armv4.CAB

My application doesn't use replication so I didn't copy over the second file. But what is the first one, and do I need it installed on the device?

sorry, I've misread your post, but my test actually worked as expected... so the following question comes to mind.. is the setting file available and present in the target file system in order to be consumed by the setup?

I am working with this exact process right now for an installation project in my office. In order to use the command line parameters you first have to extract the SQLEXPR32.EXE file by typing something such as c:\(dirname)\SQLEXPR32.EXE /X

Setup will then prompt you for a place to extract the files and you can then use the SETUP.EXE command from that folder with the /SETTINGS option. Hope this helps.

Isn't that exactly what I have in my code snippet? I have /settings "c:\settings.ini" right there... Also, the key here is that I want this to work with the SP2 download of SQLExpress, specifically, this file: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65212

(not the files that are a result of extracting that file)

Probably I am missing something simple in your reply.

sorry, I've misread your post, but my test actually worked as expected... so the following question comes to mind.. is the setting file available and present in the target file system in order to be consumed by the setup?

I am working with this exact process right now for an installation project in my office. In order to use the command line parameters you first have to extract the SQLEXPR32.EXE file by typing something such as c:\(dirname)\SQLEXPR32.EXE /X

Setup will then prompt you for a place to extract the files and you can then use the SETUP.EXE command from that folder with the /SETTINGS option. Hope this helps.

installing SQL Express via commandline

So, I read this thread: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=416220&SiteID=1, which suggested that I could call SQLEXPR32.EXE (the SP2 download) with the relevant commandline args in exactly the same way I could call setup.exe. Namely, if I were to call:

then I should be able to use

where my setup.ini contains

However, this doesn't seem to be working at all - the commandline params to SQLEXPR32.EXE are completely ignored, and it runs as if they were not specified.

Would be great to get some help on this. I'm equally happy with the set of commands I need to call in order to extract SQLEXPR32 and then run setup, but SQLEXPR32 seems to extract to a random GUID dir, and automatically start setup, neither of which is condusive to automating it.

hi Dan,

you did not specify the /settings parameter, which identifies the template ini file to be consumed..

I just tested an installation as following:

c:\start /wait c:\share\sqlexpr.exe /qb /settings c:\share\sqlexpress.ini

[file sqlexpress.ini]
[OPTIONS]
ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine
INSTANCENAME=MyInstance
SAPWD=auctioni_000
SECURITYMODE=SQL
[/file sqlexpress.ini]

and worked as expected..

Is this article actually accurate in terms of the statement that says that if you don't provide a value for the property SqlServiceAccountName then it defaults to LocalSystem? I'm finding that it defaults to Network Service.

Mind you, I'm using a command line, and either using SQLACCOUNT="" or not providing the SQLACCOUNT option at all.

It would be nice to work out how to run the service by default as LocalSystem. Any help would be appreciated.

The default for SqlServiceAccountName is:

Network Service on Windows XP/2003

Local Service on Windows 2000

I assume that you should be able to set it to Local System using the command line, but you should be careful about account selection. Remember that SQL Express has all the permissions of the account that it runs as. What ever the Local System account can do, SQL Express will be able to do if instructed to do so via stored procedure or CLR function, etc.

The reason we chose to use Network Service (where available) in SQL 2005 is to reduce the "surface area" of risk when running SQL Express. By using a low permission account by default, we limit the ways that SQL Express can be exploited by "bad people."

If you want to give SQL Express higher level permissions, that is you're choice, but we expect you to understand the risks before you do so.
