Hi,
I think there is a instance conflicts. THis occurs if an instance of SQL
Server is already
installed on the target machine. To overcome this issue, you have to specify
the Instance name while running the setup.
Setup.exe INSTANCENAME=<name> SAPWD=<sapassword > /l*v c:\log.txt
Create a verbose log usinfg /l*v so that you can determine if installation
was successful or not.

>|||That's what I thought but when I tried doing so the installation proceeded
and then displayed an error that the Full Text service failed to install.
This was the only error I received.
I rebooted the machine and saw that the SQL Server folders had been
installed but the services had not been created. I tried to uninstall SQL
Server from the Add/Remove programs but SQL Server was not in the list. I
then inserted the SQL Server CD and tried to uninstall. There was no option
to uninstall. There was however, an option to install a new instance of SQL
Server.
Thus I appear to be in the worst situation: 1) I cannot uninstall because
neither CP or the SQL Server CD recognizes the failed installation and 2) I
cannot reinstall because the SQL Server CD thinks the default installation
already exists. (I cannot installed a named instance of SQL Server for use
with MS CRM)
BTW, I installed the standard edition of SQL Server with Mixed Mode
authentication to run under a specific domain administrator account.
Does anyone have any idea how I can clean up this failed installation?

Installing SQL Server Express

I am having a problem installing SQL Server Express 2005 from the command line in that it gets part way through and then stops - no message - just terminates. After much rooting around in log files and running a normal install I'm pretty sure that it is stopping because of a warning regarding "Minimum Hardware Requirements".

The laptop I'm trying to install it on is a Samsung X05, Centrino 1.4, 1gb RAM and 60gb free disk space. I've tried it on another laptop (Sony with a higher spec.) and get exactly the same problem.

As far as I can see the hardware spec is well above the recommended minumum so I'm at a loss as to what to try next to overcome the problem. If anyone has any suggestions then I'd be very grateful.

The warning messages are just that, warnings, and shouldn't lead to any failures. So my guess is that it might be something with the way your command line is structured. For starters, can you post your command line install (remove passwords if they are used of course)? Can you also search your install logs for the text string "value 3"? This typically follows a more informative error message if one exists.

The command line i am using is as follows:

Unfortunately none of the log files contain "value 3". However:

1. Summary.txt contains the following message:

"The current system does not meet the recommended hardware requirements for this SQL Server release. For detailed hardware requirements, see the readme file or SQL Server Books Online.

Setup succeeded with the installation, inspect the log file completely for status on all the components. "

2. Core(Local).Log contains:

"Machine = MYMACHINE, Article = Processor, Result = 0 (0x0)
Machine = MYMACHINE, Article = PhysicalMemory, Result = 70010 (0x1117a)
Machine = MYMACHINE, Article = DiskFreeSpace, Result = 0 (0x0)"

and

"Article: Minimum Hardware Requirement, Result: Warning
Description: Minimum hardware requirements are not met, therefore, some components may not perform as expected. Action: Make sure minimum hardware requirements are met. Please refer to the readme for minimum requirements."

I'm assuming that it means that it doesn't think that the machine has sufficient memory but given the spec of it (see my previous message) then surely it should.

If you (or anyone else) has any further thoughts then I'd be really grateful because I'm stumped on this one. My only alternative is to let users loose on the full SQL install interface and there are too many for me to want to do that!!

Using the command line to automate it will be fine except if they get the same warning i am getting because it then fails to install correctly rather than giving an option to continue.

Hey Brian, I think the issue with the command line is that you haven't supplied anything for the ADDLOCAL parameter. By adding "ADDLOCAL=ALL" to the end of your command line, you should get what you're looking for. If you only want to install a subset of the product, you can take a look at the template.ini file for some examples or reply back with specific questions.

After reinstalling SQL server 2005 I got this message:

Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with ( Error getting Instance ID From name).

Please uninstall, then re-run stetup to correct this problem.

There are also 51 setup log files in: Setup/Boostrap/Log/files/

Can Ido that manually? Or is there another way to solve this problem.

I would suggest that your first step is to examine the set of logs from your most recent attempt to seek more informaton about a specific error that we can troubleshoot. If that fails, there is a KB article that discusses removing SQL 2005 from your computer, you can find it at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967.

To reinstall XP Pro is not an option.

Is there a possibility to rebuild the registery so that is everything new?

Looking for a great answer to solve my problem.

Suggest you to use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to see if their are something that is pending, remove if any and install fresh copy of sql express and report back with findings

You can find the logs at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG. Summary.txt will tell you which component failed and give a pointer to the detail log for that component. In the component error log, look for actions with a Return Value of 3, which indicates falure; the information above the return value will indicate what was happening during the failure.

I suggest that you don't use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. All this tool does is hack your registry to remove the Uninstall keys for program. It doesn't fix anything and it doesn't correct anything. This tool does have it's uses, but not in this case.

Hi Henk,

1503 seems to be a windows error indicating that you don't have permissions to something on the file system. One more set of logs to investigate I'm afraid.

Check out the SQL error logs that are found at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG and look for the log dated around the time that your setup failed. (It will probably be the last one unless you've fixed this sine then.) Look through the log, it will probably be short since startup failed, for errors indicating that the server couldn't access or open a file or registry key.

Let me know what you find.

Error 29503. SQL Server can't start.

Hi Henk,

1503 seems to be a windows error indicating that you don't have permissions to something on the file system. One more set of logs to investigate I'm afraid.

Check out the SQL error logs that are found at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG and look for the log dated around the time that your setup failed. (It will probably be the last one unless you've fixed this sine then.) Look through the log, it will probably be short since startup failed, for errors indicating that the server couldn't access or open a file or registry key.

Let me know what you find.

I have the same issue. When attempting to install SP4 using the command:

setup /upgradesp sqlrun INSTANCENAME=MICROSOFT##SSEE /L*v d:\msdelog.log

I get the error:

"The product is not installed. Check it a appropriate instance of MSDE is installed."

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2000 w/ SP2 on Windows Server 2003 (WS2003). However, when I do, I get a message saying that WS2003 will not support it. I've looked on microsoft.com and found that I need SQL Server 2000 w/ SP3. My problem is that I have the SP3 Upgrade for SQL Server 2000, but I can't install that without first having installed SQL Server 2000. How can I get SQL Server 2000 on WS2003

Installing Sql Server

Hi,

I downloaded the Sql server 2005 express advanced and installed it in my computer. Everything went well except for a warning message that said "minimum hardware requirements not met". I have dual core pentium 4 computer with 250 G hard disk and 1gb ram.

Anyways, after installing I cannot find the real application anywhere. When I goto start, programs, sql server it only shows sql server configuration tools. I have never used sql server before and how do I start the app?

Any help will be much appreciated. Please note I already installed net framework 2 and also visual studio 2005 professional.

You need to go and download Express Advanced Services which includes SQL Server Management Studio Express, thats the main GUI for SSE.|||

Thx for yr reply. Actually I downloaded & installed the sql server with advanced options but I did not see any gui. So after posting my question on this forum I downloaded the SQL Server Management Studio Express from microsoft and installed it and now I have got what I was looking for.

What I don't understand is how come if advanced options had the gui builtin it did not work in my computer?

Hi Fareez,

Management Studio Express is included in Express Advanced, but you have to choose to install it from the Feature Tree in the Setup UI. It sounds like you just did a default install without changing the feature set being installed.

For other who experience this, you can go back into the Express Advanced setup from Add/Remove Programs and choose to install Management Studio Express, you don't have to download it separately. Just open Add/Remove Programs, select SQL Server 2005 and click Change. Follow the prompts to modify your installation.

Installing SQL Reporting Stop with an Error! message

Hi.
I am trying to Install SQL Reporting in a w2k machine with SP 4 and SQL 2000
SP3
When it start the installation, it fail with an Error! message only.
Has anyone seen this error and what is the solution

"Error!" while trying to install component "Microsoft SQL Server Reporting
Services Setup Support Files". It doesn't give any other message besides
"Error!", doesn't create a log file in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\RS Setup Bootstrap\Log\, and it doesn't write anything out to the
event log. I'm also on Windows 2000 SP4, and SQL 2000 with SP3. Any help
would really be appreciated.

installing SQL 2005 Management Studio

Hello:
When I try to install SQL Server 2005 Management Studio from the
SQLRun_Tools.exe file on the CD, I get a message saying the following:
"A component that you have specificed in the ADD_LOCAL propety is already
installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template ini and
set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component."
How do I get past this and get the Studio installed?

Installing SQL

I get the message:

Sql Server 2005 Setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio, .Net Framework, or Sql Server 2005. Use Add or Remove Programs to remove these components, and then run SQL Server 2005 again.

I have run the program vs_uninst_betas.exe but this did not help.

go in the ADD/REMOVE Programs in the control panel and install every beta product which used .NET 2.0 beta like SQL Server 2005 beta 1/2/3 , Yukon, VS Express, VS Net etc. and/or additionally the -NET Framework package by itself.
